    About the Author

    Gil Fried, JD, is an associate professor at the University of New Haven School of Business in Connecticut, where he teaches sport finance at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He holds both a master's degree with a concentration in sport management and a law degree from The Ohio State University.

    Extensively published and well spoken on the subject of sport finance, Dr. Fried has worked closely with the International Association of Assembly Managers on a variety of projects. He also has served as general counsel for several sport facilities and associations, including the Sportsplex Operators and Developers Association and the Resort and Commercial Recreation Association. Additionally, Dr. Fried has served as an expert witness in several major sport valuation cases involving businesses or lost income due to professional athlete injury.

    A member of the California State Bar, Dr. Fried is chief executive officer of Gil Fried & Association, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in sport law and finance-related issues. He makes his home in New Haven, Connecticut, with his wife, Susan, and their children. In his free time, he enjoys playing badminton (he is the head coach of the Yale Badminton Club) and volunteering in his community.

    Steven J. Shapiro, PhD, is the chair of the Department of Economics and Finance and an associate professor of economics and finance at the University of New Haven. Dr. Shapiro received his BA in economics and mathematics from the University of Virginia and his MA and PhD in economics from Georgetown University. He serves on the board of governors of the Society of Litigation Economists and is the coeditor of Litigation Economics Review.

    Dr. Shapiro has written and presented numerous papers on the valuation of employee stock options, the appraisal of closely held firms, the calculation of damages, and applications of financial event study methodologies to examine the effects of litigation on shareholders. In addition, he has provided expert testimony and served as a consultant in legal matters that required the measurement of damages resulting from wrongful death, personal injury, and wrongful employment termination; the computation of lost profits in commercial litigation; and the analysis of relevant markets in antitrust cases.

    Dr Shapiro's professional memberships include the American Economic Association, American Finance Association, American Statistical Association, National Association of Business Economists, National Association of Forensic Economists, and American Academy of Economics and Financial Experts.

    Timothy D. DeSchriver, EdD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He completed his undergraduate education at Villanova University, holds a master's degree in economics from Penn State University, and earned his doctorate in sport management from the University of Northern Colorado.

    Widely published in several major sport management and economics journals such as the Journal of Sports Management, Sport Marketing Quarterly, and the Eastern Economic Journal, Dr. DeSchriver also serves on the editorial board of Sport Marketing Quarterly. He coauthored a chapter on sport finance and economics in Introduction to Sport Management, Third Edition. He served as a field economist for the U.S. Department of Labor and was also the interim associate athletic director at the University of Northern Colorado.

    A member of the North American Society for Sport Management, Dr. DeSchriver serves as an executive council member for the organization's annual conference. As a member of the UMass Center for Spectator Sport Research, he has also helped to complete research contracts for sport organizations such as the National Steeplechase Association, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and the Anschutz Entertainment Group.
